UPPER MARLBORO, Md.––First Baptist Church, Upper Marlboro, (FBCUM) will host a free conference,”Affirming the Authority of Scripture,” Friday, Nov. 15 through Sunday, Nov. 17.

Robert Plummer will be the guest speaker. Plummer is currently a professor of New Testament Interpretation at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and has served in missions throughout the world. He is also a prolific writer. The upcoming seminar is based on Plummer’s book,  “40 Questions About Interpreting Scripture.”

The seminar will cover the authorship of the Bible; Jesus and the Old Testament; How the books were selected; The accuracy of the Bible and How to improve Biblical interpretation skills.

Plummer will address the question he is often asked, “How was the Bible written by human hands yet be fully God’s Word?” He’ll address the biblical canon— How were the books and letters chosen? Why do Roman Catholics have additional books included in their version?

He’ll address the inerrancy of the Bible—What does inerrancy really mean?

Plummer said in his presentation, and in his written works, he tries very hard to be clear and accurate but not oversimple.

“My life is devoted to studying scripture and teaching others the Word of God,” Plummer said.

Wayne Kempson, pastor of First Baptist Church of Waldorf will also participate in the conference. Kempson will be leading a session titled, “Jesus and the Old Testament.”

Pam Jensen, FBCUM director of educational ministries, said the church is very excited to offer this conference. Jensen said FBCUM, like many BCM/D churches, is very diverse ethnically, socioeconomically and also denominationally. Many people coming to Baptist churches today are migrating from other denominations and want clarification on how  Baptists interpret Scripture.
