It is without question that the benefits of daily exercise can be life changing. Conversely the art of not moving for a few hours at a time can be deadly. Whether you are a couch potato or a desk potato you might want to take notice.
There have been numerous studies warning us of Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in which a blood clot forms in the leg that has been linked to long airplane flights. Prolonged sitting, regardless of where it occurs, seems to increase the risk for blood clots by reducing blood flow to the legs.
In a study of 73 healthy adults, blood clots were no more likely to develop when the study participants sat in a chamber simulating an airplane cabin’s reduced air pressure and oxygen levels for eight hours than when they sat for the same period at ground level.
When sitting for prolonged periods get up at least once an hour and walk around, or flex and extend your ankles and knees while seated. Keep this in mind when you plan that vacation travel that will keep you stationary in your car seat for a number of hours. While at your office desk consider an hourly timer to alert you when it’s time to get up and move. Why not get up and take a quick walk outside and admire God’s beauty.
May God bless you with vibrant health.
