Following a five-year battle with ovarian cancer, Kimberly Ann Young passed away on Dec. 11, surrounded by her beloved family. Kimberly “Kym” was the wife of Mitchell “Mitch” Young, the senior pastor of Maryland City Baptist Church (MCBC) in Laurel.
Kym was born to the late Thomas and Edna Faye Boone on Sept. 5, 1965, and raised by the late Donald and Beatrice Smallwood. She graduated from Hammond High School in 1983 and later returned to serve as a health room assistant nurse.
She and Mitch were married for 38 years, and she served alongside him at MCBC. Kim was known as a “role model for other Christians to emulate.”
Jennifer Williams, a friend, said, “Kym was an incredible woman of Christ who welcomed all and loved them fiercely. She was an amazing example of love and patience … and as a pastor’s wife, she was a mentor to me over the years.”
Natalie Burgess, who sang with Kym in the church praise team and was a daycare provider for Kym’s grandchildren, said Kym was an encourager. “Kym would say, ‘Hey friend, it’s going to be alright, Be still and wait on God,’ She always said these two small sayings. Yet, they had such a great meaning,” said Burgess.
In addition to Mitch, Kym is survived by their five children: Adam (Monica) Young of Stevensville; Seth (Ashley) Young of Finksburg; Andrew Harding of Boonsboro; Emily (Chris) Greene of Savage; and Melissa (Wayne) Crawford of Savage. She was a cherished “Memaw” to twelve grandchildren: Kayden (16), Lane (15), Emalyn (9), Paisley (8), Parker (6), Finley (5), Brantley (5), Reece (4), Greyson (3), Ella (3), Ryker (3), and Brooks (3). Additionally, she is survived by her siblings Thomas Boone, Robin Boone, and Jeffery Smallwood.
