Description

George Liele was an African American and emancipated slave who became the founding pastor of First Bryan Baptist Church and First African Baptist Church, in Savannah, Georgia. He later would become a missionary to Jamaica.

The African American Fellowship of the BCM/D has established a scholarship fund in honor of George Liele, the first African American missionary for the SBC. The purpose of the scholarship is to support African American missionaries and churches and to aid their efforts with foreign missions.
