Seven Basics For An Effective Men’s Ministry

RIDGECREST, N.C. — Fred Luter, pastor of Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans, told participants in a conference on men’s ministry at Black Church Leadership Week there are seven basics for an effective men’s ministry.
- The ministry must stay biblically based. Go back to Genesis 2, Exodus 18:13-27 and Acts 6:1-7 to see God’s desire and design for men.
- The ministry must have the support of the pastor.
- The ministry must choose an effective leader. This leader must be a born again believer, role model and good listener. He also must be compassionate, have biblical knowledge and exhibit leadership skills.
- The ministry must be publicized. Ways to do this include announcements from the pulpit, the church bulletin, Sunday school classes, posters, flyers and word of mouth.
- The ministry must have a good kick-off event. Keep it informal, non-threatening and, if possible, away from the church (picnic, bowling, ballgame, etc.).
- The ministry must have set, consistent meeting times. Decide when and where to meet, and then do it. If you say you’ll meet on the second Tuesday at 7:00, meet if only two men show up.
- The ministry must have some ground rules. Meetings are not male or female bashing sessions. Keep everything shared confidential. Minister to the spiritual and emotional needs of the men. Hold each other accountable.
