COLUMBIA, Md. — It’s not a matter of “if” a disaster will happen, but “when.”
The Baptist Convention of Maryland/Delaware will have disaster relief (DR) training from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on October 12, at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Huntingtown, Maryland.
Southern Baptist Disaster Relief provides opportunities for volunteers to help victims by providing food service, chain saw or mud-out work, laundry, communications, chaplaincy, and more. The DR ministry also offers wonderful opportunities to share the love of Jesus.
Maryland/Delaware DR volunteers could share countless stories of praying with victims or their families, giving them Bibles, planting spiritual seeds, and sometimes leading people to Jesus.
Kerry Hinton, the senior pastor of Lynnhaven Baptist Church in Pocomoke, Maryland, has been involved in disaster relief for years as a volunteer and leader. Hinton says, “We always see ‘God sightings’ wherever we go. Sometimes it’s not the people we’re helping — it’s the neighbors.” (Read more about Hinton and his team’s experience with disaster relief here.)
Classes for the upcoming training include:
- Introduction to Southern Baptist Disaster Relief (12:30 to 2 p.m.)
- Feeding Team (9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.)
- Laundry Team (9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.)
- Recovery Team (9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.)
New volunteers are required to complete two classes, one of which must be “Introduction to Southern Baptist Disaster Relief.”
The cost is $30.00 for new volunteers and returning volunteers who need a new badge. Classes are free for returning volunteers who do not need a new badge.
